InMarketing Today

The daily debrief for leaders in B2B financial services and fintech.

Today’s takeaway

Being seen is a strategy, not a side effect.

Cash App is selling a $25 magic wand because digital wallets are invisible. NatWest is putting £50m back into the branches it spent a decade closing. And only 18 per cent of marketers say they can see what their own channels are doing. The thread running through today's news is visibility: customers buy what they can see and trust what shows up — in their hand, on their high street, in their feed. Audit where your brand is physically and visibly present in your customer's life, then ask whether your measurement can actually see what that presence earns you.

Financial Services

Reputation cuts both ways: HSBC in the dock, SpaceX oversubscribed on brand alone

French prosecutors have brought preliminary charges against HSBC's Swiss division over allegations it helped former Lebanese central bank governor Riad Salameh embezzle public funds — the same Salameh charged in Beirut with embezzling more than $330mn (Source: Financial Times, 04 Jun 2026). The bank disclosed the French and Swiss investigations last year and quietly cut more than 1,000 wealthy Middle Eastern clients, after Swiss regulator Finma found serious anti-money-laundering breaches tied to over $300mn in transactions. "We are unable to comment on a legal matter" holds the legal line but cedes the narrative — and that is the reputational arithmetic of banking: transactions from 2002 still write headlines in 2026.

More than 35,000 UK retail investors have registered interest in the SpaceX flotation with Hargreaves Lansdown alone — the first UK retail offer of an overseas IPO, seeking up to $86bn at a $1.78tn valuation with the largest retail allocation ever attempted in a megacap listing (Source: Financial Times, 05 Jun 2026). Morningstar values the company at $780bn — less than half the asking price — yet the order book is filling on attention alone. No campaign did this; the brand is doing the bookbuild, which is what marketing looks like when it is finished before the salespeople arrive.

Fintech

Wall Street tokenises the deposit, Lloyds scales the agents, and Block sells magic

JP Morgan, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo will launch a co-owned tokenised deposit network in the first half of 2027, settling instantly on a 24/7 blockchain in direct response to the stablecoin boom (Source: Finextra, 05 Jun 2026). The Clearing House will operate it — a logical choice given it already runs CHIPS, EPN and RTP, and its 21 bank owners include Barclays, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and Santander, hinting at cross-border ambitions (Source: Ledger Insights, 05 Jun 2026). When incumbents adopt the challenger's vocabulary, the category war is over and the positioning war begins: the prize now is who gets to define what "digital money" means to a corporate treasurer.

Lloyds Banking Group has signed a multi-year deal with Microsoft to deploy the 365 E7 "AI Frontier Suite" across the entire business — one of the first UK banks to do so — building on 40,000 Copilot licences with 97 per cent active use (Source: FStech, 05 Jun 2026). The headline promise is more personalised service for 28 million customers; the substance is governance, with agents managed through Agent 365 and the bank's own Envoy platform with built-in risk controls. That is the communications lesson for regulated firms: talk about control as fluently as you talk about capability, because your customers — and your regulator — are listening for both.

Block's Cash App has launched a $25 contactless "magic wand" — the first of its NFC-enabled Cash App Tags, physical payment accessories inspired by a TikTok trend and aimed at how "Gen Z expresses their style and identity" (Source: Finextra, 05 Jun 2026). Where digital wallets are invisible and cards stay buried in pockets, Block is betting on payments people can see. Most fintechs spend millions trying to be remembered at the moment of payment; Block just made the payment itself the billboard.

Media & Marketing

The high street is back in fashion just as the dashboard goes dark

NatWest will pump £50m into its branch network over the next 18 months and has pledged no closures until at least 2029 — this from the bank that shuttered more than 1,000 sites in a decade, second only to Barclays (Source: City A.M., 05 Jun 2026). Barclays made a similar U-turn earlier this year, HSBC has pledged its 327 branches until 2027 and Nationwide until 2030, while Lloyds keeps cutting — another 95 announced in February. The branch has quietly changed cost centres: it now sits on the marketing budget, because a visible high-street presence is the most credible trust signal a bank can buy, and a no-closures pledge is a brand campaign with a completion date.

The average marketing team now runs six separate measurement tools, yet only 18 per cent of marketers say they have a clear view of what is actually working, according to Bitly's Marketing Visibility Report (Source: MarTech, 05 Jun 2026). The worst visibility gap is in organic social — the channel 72 per cent of marketers use most — and AI answers, zero-click behaviour and dark-funnel activity are making it worse. More dashboards have not produced more insight; decide which outcome matters before you buy a seventh tool to measure it.
