Nest Commits Up To £1bn To Venture Capital For UK Savers
Source: Financial Times, 8 Jul 2026
Nest, the UK's largest workplace pension scheme with 14 million members, is committing up to £1bn to venture capital, starting with £200mn allocated to Schroders Capital. The move forms part of a plan to lift Nest's private markets allocation from 19 to 30 per cent of assets by 2030, said Mark Fawcett, chief executive of Nest Invest.
The signal matters as much as the sum. Nest built its brand on being the safe default for auto-enrolled savers who never chose a pension provider themselves. Committing £1bn to venture capital tells 14 million people, most of whom will never read a fund factsheet, that "safe" now includes backing ambitious UK start-ups. That is a brand promise, not just an investment thesis — and it only holds if the returns follow.
Any financial brand shifting from custodian to active investor needs to explain that change in plain language before the performance numbers do the explaining instead. Nest has a head start on that conversation while £200mn is still a headline rather than a track record — use it.
